Natural Ways to Beat Insomnia and Achieve Restful Sleep

Get more out of your waking life by getting a good night’s sleep.  Sleep is a basic need, but most of us don’t get enough of it and with the increasing demands of modern life, it is important to formulate strategies for ensuring that our bodies get the rest they require.

Undoubtedly, if sleeplessness becomes chronic, it leads to a variety of serious health problems.  Without proper sleep, people cannot perform their jobs properly and they are more inclined to all kinds of errors and accidents. Proper sleep is important to concentration, mood, and memory.  It is also important to anyone who is interested in maintaining a healthy weight or in losing weight.

Proper sleep is a necessity; not a luxury. It is required to regulate the proper functioning of the body’s many systems.  It is important to the health of the heart, the proper functioning of the brain and the production of necessary hormones.  Sleep is necessary for the proper functioning of the immune system.

It is through sleep that the body repairs itself, therefore, the importance of a good night’s sleep should not be under-estimated.  It is true that nearly everyone has a sleepless night from time to time.  If you frequently suffer from insomnia or simply do not sleep well there are a few things you can try to remedy the problem.

Consider the quality of the air and other conditions in your room.  Is the air better with the windows opened or closed? If the air is too moist, you may benefit from the use of a dehumidifier.  If the air quality is very poor, try an air filter.  Not everyone is the same when it comes to room temperatures.  Determine what is most comfortable for you.

If noises bother you, sleep with ear plugs.  Get black out shades and heavy drapes.  Pin the drapes, if necessary, to bar any light entering the room from outside.

Assess the condition of your mattress.  If your mattress is not comfortable, it may be time for a new one.

Exercise a half hour to an hour before retiring.  Lift weights, walk on the treadmill or do your favorite  aerobics DVD.  Exercising in the evening can help you to fall asleep faster and enjoy a deeper more restful sleep by relaxing the muscles.

Enjoy a warm bath before sleeping.

Brew a tea of lemon balm, hops, catnip, or chamomile and drink it just before lying down to sleep.  Add Valerian root to your tea to relax muscles and sleep well once you finally do fall asleep.  You should awaken refreshed.

Cut back on coffee consumption, particularly in the afternoon and evening.

If you are suffering from acute insomnia, have a small, healthy snack.  You will not sleep well if your body is hungry.

Supplement your diet with Vitamin B-5 (Pantothenic acid) and Brewer’s Yeast.

Another to beat insomnia and get a great night’s sleep is through the use of aromatherapy and a relaxing massage.

While self-massage is an option, it is best if you can find someone who is willing to perform a relaxing ten or fifteen minute massage right before bed time. The essential oils in the following massage oil formula will help to induce a restful sleep.

Fill a twelve or sixteen ounce bottle almost to the top with a carrier oil. Grape seed oil, almond oil and jojoba are all good choices. Olive oil will do.  Add five to ten drops of any combination of the following relaxing essential oils:

* Lemon grass
* Lemon balm (Melissa)
* Lavender
* Rosemary
* Clary sage
* Chamomile
* Ylang-ylang

Shake this mixture thoroughly. Warm the liquid between your hands and apply it liberally to tense muscles. Soon, a restful sleep will ensue.

Practicing any of these relaxing techniques regularly will help you defeat insomnia.
