Natural Remedies for Urinary Tract Infections – Home Remedies to Relieve Symptoms of UTI.

About 80% of us have at least one urinary tract infection (which is most often limited to bladder) during their lifetime. The majority of urinary tract infections are caused by the Escerichia coli (E. coli), bacteria which is normally found in the gastrointestinal tract. Apart from being highly annoying and painful, a urinary tract infection usually does not represent any major health risk at first.

However, a urinary tract infection can cause serious complications if the bacteria spreads to your kidney. For that reason it is important to act immediately.

If you have a strong and persistent urge to urinate, experience pain during urination while passing small amounts of urine, then you probably have a urinary tract infection. You might also experience other symptoms such as abdominal pain, cloudy or smelly urine,  or traces of blood in the urine.

If you are experiencing any symptoms of a urinary tract infection, you should visit your health care provider as soon as possible.

Meanwhile and in addition to medical treatment, you can also relieve the discomfort and pain with the following home remedies:

Drink plenty of water. Many report that they managed to make the symptoms subside by drinking large amounts of water in a very short time period.
Put a hot water bottle on your abdomen to relieve the pain and discomfort.
Drink barley water. Add a teaspoon of barley to one gallon of water and leave it boiling for one hour.  Strain and let it cool.  Drink three cups of barley water per day.
Do not smoke and do not drink caffeine drinks. Both tobacco and caffeine irritate your bladder and worsen the symptoms of a urinary tract infection.
Drink cranberry juice. It will help relieve the symptoms and it is particularly useful as preventative measure.  Drink one glass of cranberry juice each day.

There are also some prepared Natural Remedies for Urinary Tract Infection which have proven to be very effective.

Safety note: Please keep in mind that all urinary tract infections require medical treatment. If you are having symptoms of a urinary tract infection or if noticing traces of blood in your urine you are advised to contact your health care provider as soon as possible.
