Natural Remedies for The Common Cold – Home Remedies to Relieve Cold & Flu Symptoms

The common cold is one of the most common upper respiratory tract infections which can severely affect daily routines and even make you miss work or school.  Most people recover within several days and do not require medical help.

The common cold is mostly harmless, but its symptoms are very unpleasant and can make a person feel miserable. Some of the symptoms include; runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, sneezing, headache and fatigue. Fortunately, you can relieve virtually all symptoms of a common cold with proper home treatment and with the following home remedies:

Echinacea tincture. Take echinacea tincture as directed as soon as the first symptoms of a cold appear. It will not prevent the symptoms from occurring but it might significantly reduce their severity and shorten the period of recovery.
Keep warm and rest. If possible, stay home from work or school and rest in a warm room.
Increased fluid intake. Drink, drink, drink. Tea, water, juice and warm soup are all excellent choices. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
Humidify the air. Dry air worsens the symptoms of common cold. A humidifier or vaporizer will help you to relieve cough, sore throat and nasal congestion.
Eat lots of fruits and other foods high in vitamin C and try some chicken soup. Both vitamin C and chicken soup will help relieve the majority of common cold symptoms and make you feel better.
Gargle salt water to soothe your throat. Mix one teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle several times per day.
Steam your sinuses to relieve nasal congestion. Pour boiling water in a bowl, lean over the bowl, and cover your head and the bowl with a towel.

There are also some very effective prepared natural remedies for cold that you can try.

As always, consult with a health care professional before beginning any course of treatment. Do not use echinacea tincture if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. If symptoms worsen, consult with your Doctor.
