Natural Remedies for Sore Throat – Effective Home Remedies for Sore Throat

Sore throat or pharyngitis is experienced by most of us frequently throughout our lives. A sore throat is often the first symptom of the common cold, flu, and other viral and bacterial infections of the upper respiratory tract.

A dry, scratchy, painful and/or swollen throat which occurs as a result of an upper respiratory tract infection can be successfully managed with the following home remedies:

Increased fluid intake will relieve sore throat as well as other symptoms of the infection and shorten the time of recovery.
Hot tea/soup. Virtually every hot tea and soup will immediately soothe the dryness and pain in your throat.
Gargle warm water with salt. Mix one teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle several times per day.
Humidify the air. Dry air makes sore throat and other symptoms of a common cold and flu even worse.
Thyme tea. Thyme is very helpful for a series of respiratory tract infections including sore throat. Gargle thyme tea three times a day.
Sage (Salvia officinalis) tea. Like thyme, sage is also a very popular herbal remedy for sore throat and cough.
Do not smoke. Smoking irritates the mucous membranes of the throat and makes sore throat even worse.
Honey. Take one teaspoon of honey several times per day or add two teaspoons of honey to your favorite tea.
Add some vitamins to your diet. That way you will shorten the period of recovery, boost your immune system and prevent the future infections of the upper respirator tract.

There are also very effective prepared natural remedies for sore throat that you can try.

As always, it is recommended that you check with your doctor before beginning any course of treatment. You should also visit your health care provider if:
– symptoms persist despite home treatment
– you have a high fever, rash, severe headache, or swollen lymph nodes
– you experience difficulty swallowing
– or you are experiencing dizziness.
