Natural Remedies for Insomnia – Home Remedies for Insomnia

Sleep DeprivationInsomnia – trouble falling or staying asleep is something virtually everyone experiences from time to time, especially when under a lot of stress. Inadequate or poor sleep patterns can affect daily activities and work performance, and being stressed from not being able to sleep often makes it even worse. Fortunately, sleeping difficulties can be successfully treated with several home remedies and proper sleep hygiene.

If you have sleeping difficulties, wake up tired in the morning, have daytime sleepiness or/and suffer from lack of energy you should start by improving your sleep hygiene:

Make your bed and bedroom comfortable for sleep and use it only for sleeping. Remove things such as computers and TV’s from your bedroom. Do not read, eat or work in your bed. Keep the bedroom temperature comfortable – a bit cooler during the day. Close the door and curtains when you go to sleep.
Avoid taking naps during the day.
Do not smoke, drink caffeine beverages and alcohol, and eat large meals one hour before bedtime. However, do not go to sleep hungry or thirsty either.
Get out the bed if you cannot fall asleep. Read something or watch TV until you become drowsy.
Make a sleep schedule. Go to bed and get out of bed at about the same time every day.
Regular exercise. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. If you have not been physically active for a longer period start gradually or consult with your health care provider first.
Learn stress management. Find a way to relax and deal with stress which is one of the leading causes of insomnia.
Check your medications. Sleepless nights might be a side effect of medications you take. If you believe that insomnia might be related to medications consult with your health care provider.

Instead of counting sheep you might also try a prepared natural remedy for insomnia, or any of the following home remedies:

Light snacks before bedtime. Health experts advise against eating too much before going to bed but light snacks might help you overcome the feeling of hunger and help you fall asleep. Some foods work as mild sedatives and induce sleep. Eat few cookies, drink a glass of warm milk or eat a little honey.
Aromatherapy. Add few drops of lavender oil, chamomile oil or rose oil to bath water.
Herbal remedies. Tissue salts,  Chamomile tea, lemon balm tea and lime blossom tea are renowned for their sedative and calming properties which make them very useful as a sleep aid.
