Natural Remedies for Constipation – Home Remedies for Relief of Constipation

Constipation – infrequent bowel movement and stools which are difficult and often painful to expel is the most common in the elderly but it can also affect young adults as well as children. Constipation is most often caused by poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, inadequate fluid intake and stress but it can also be caused by certain medications such as pain relievers, antidepressants and oral contraceptives. It can also be also a symptom of a serious condition including colorectal cancer.

The treatment of constipation greatly depends on the underlying cause but you can try to increase the frequency of bowel movements and loosen the stool with the following home remedies:

Change of diet. Add foods high in dietary fibers (the majority of fruits and vegetables, whole grains) to your diet and avoid processed and refined foods.
Regular exercise. Mild to moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week will help you increase the frequency of your bowel movements as well as improving your general health and overall well-being.
Adequate fluid intake will help to loosen your stools.
Warm and cold. Alternate cold and warm compresses on the abdominal area for about 20 minutes to stimulate intestinal activity.
Rhubarb. The herb has been used in traditional Chinese medicine both for constipation and diarrhea for thousands of years. Please keep in mind that an overdose of rhubarb can cause diarrhea. You are advised against using rhubarb if being pregnant or breast-feeding, or if having arthritis, kidney disease or urinary tract disorders/ infections.

You should visit your health care provider as soon as possible if:
