Eleven Things That Will Help You Maintain Youthful Skin

We all want to look young for as long as possible, and this can drive us to desperately invest in expensive creams and treatments that rarely work in the way that is advertised. Fortunately, some surprisingly straightforward diet and lifestyle modifications can help you to maintain a youthful and healthy glow. Read on to discover eleven effective ways to keep your skin looking younger for longer without breaking the bank.

1) Exfoliate your skin twice a week:

Exfoliating creams do not have to be expensive in order to be effective, as their mechanism of action is rather simple. All of them contain slightly abrasive ingredients that remove dry, rough skin and reveal a smoother, less dull complexion. When you exfoliate, this also promotes the production of collagen, the protein that (as you may already know) is responsible for maintaining smooth, flexible skin.

2) Eat plenty of fruit:

If you want to keep your skin looking younger for longer, make sure that you regularly snack on fruits that are rich in vitamin C. Strawberries, kiwi fruits and oranges all provide you with plenty of this vital vitamin, and this leads to your body producing higher amounts of collagen. Along with exfoliation, this intake of vitamin C becomes more useful as you age, as the amount of collagen in your system slowly starts to decrease from around the age of thirty. This encourages creases and wrinkles to develop on your skin, and makes your face look older as a result. Fruits that contain ellagic acid might also help to discourage new wrinkles from forming, as ellagic acid helps to prevent the destruction of collagen. Some excellent sources of this nutrient include raspberries, cranberries, strawberries and grapes.

3) Make a habit of sleeping on your back:

Although you may not have considered it, the way you choose to sleep can influence how long you are able to maintain youthful looking skin. This is because lying on your side or your stomach slowly leads to the development of wrinkles. Specifically, lying on your stomach creates creases on your forehead because of the skin being pressed against the pillow, and lying on one particular side creates wrinkles on your cheeks and chin.

4) Reduce your intake of refined sugar:

Several different studies now show that eating too much refined sugar might promote premature aging. The problem is that it causes something called glycation, and the proteins that result from this process can damage your cells (including your skin cells). There is also evidence that these proteins reduce the elasticity of your skin, making you more likely to develop fine lines and wrinkles at a younger age.

5) Apply a moisturizing cream every morning and night:

You might think that you need to purchase a pricey moisturizer from a famous company, but research has shown that this is not the case. In fact, any moisturizer that suits your skin type will help you to maintain youthful looking skin. Ideally, you should pick out two different kinds. A day cream will keep your skin hydrated and glowing throughout the day, and a night cream will help to promote skin repair while you are sleeping. In addition, it is worth noting that many people swear by coconut milk when it comes to moisturizing your face and looking younger for longer. Some studies suggest that it slows the development of fine lines and other signs of aging. Whatever moisturizer you choose, the goal is simply to make sure that your skin receives enough moisture to prevent the development of premature aging (given that you are much more prone to wrinkles if your skin is dry).

6) Avoid being exposed to tobacco smoke:

If you smoke, or if you spend a lot of time around other people who do, the result will be visible premature aging of your skin for a number of different reasons. For one thing, when you smoke you pucker your lips in a repetitive way that begins to create fine lines (and eventually deep wrinkles) around your month. Further, when you breathe in smoke this depletes your body’s resources of vitamin C, and a lack of vitamin C leads to dried out skin that easily develops new wrinkles.

7) Eat plenty of pineapple:

Dermatological studies show that pineapples contain certain enzymes that can help to hydrate your skin, make it more flexible and remove damaged cells. All of these things promote a healthy, youthful glow.

8) Wear strong sunscreen on a daily basis:

By now, you are probably well aware of the fact that there is a strong link between sun exposure and visible aging of the skin, but you might think that you do not need to worry about this provided you wear sunscreen in the summer months. As it turns out, you are exposed to damaging ultraviolet rays even when it is cloudy outside, so the best way to maintain youthful looking skin is to apply sunscreen any time you plan to go out. Sun exposure leads to the development of deeper wrinkles at a younger age, and if you spend money on a strong sunscreen now then you will certainly be grateful one or two decades down the line.

9) Be careful about your alcohol intake:

Occasionally drinking a moderate amount of alcohol is compatible with maintaining youthful looking skin, but binge drinks leads to flushed and mottled skin that can make you look five (or even ten) years older than you actually are. This is because alcohol causes the dilation of tiny blood vessels under your skin’s surface.

10) Invest in a good humidifier:

In the winter months, you need a humidifier in your home if you are to maintain maximally youthful skin. This is because radiators, heaters and fires all lead to dry, warm air that depletes your skin’s moisture. As mentioned above, dry skin is more likely to develop wrinkles, and the moisture that a humidifier adds to the air can really help to combat this.

11) Drink at least eight glasses of water a day:

Although you probably know that doctors say that you should stay hydrated, you may think that there is no real harm in skipping your recommended daily intake of water now and again. However, even a mild degree of dehydration can lead to the kind of skin dryness that not only promotes fine lines and wrinkles but also discourages the formation of new, healthy skin cells.

As is obvious from the above suggestions, there are plenty of affordable and straightforward things that you can do in order to maintain youthful looking skin well into the fourth and fifth decades of your life. If you follow this advice, you should be able to keep your skin looking smooth and healthy for many years to come.
